I don’t do wedding but whenever I walk into a room – even if its just with friends – I’m always checking out the wall and ceilings. Bounce flash really changes a pic to a photo.

No matter what diffuser you use, there must be a surface for the light to bounce off in order for the diffuser to work (this is why they don’t work outside). If there is an available surface for bounce, I don’t need a diffuser. The only exception might be if a person has a wall behind them and no surface anywhere else, which really only occurs outside.

Make no mistake about it, constantly bouncing your flash as you move around a room requires a lot of vigilance. You are always adjusting the angle of the flash (and the power) as well as where you stand. A diffuser is much more “fire and forget.” But then, so is the “auto” mode on my camera and I don’t use that either.

Somebody on the net pointed out good results out of using Ikea diffuser. Sort of converting your flash into bare bulb. It could be your better option before considering lighting a chair :).

You can still use your diffuser, just take a few shots with it, then yank it off and take a few with bounce. I’ll bet that once you start controlling the light you won’t want to go back to the diffuser.

My first wedding assignment I was not comfortable enough with my strobe to use bounce and mostly used a diffusers the whole night, the results were decent but I’ll give this a try next time.
