I shoot basketball for a magazine here in the Philippines. I like shooting behind the basket too. You can get the faces of the players best. By the corner is no good for me. half the time the players aren’t facing you.

I have sometimes used my 70-200 in basketball but in general I don’t like it for this game. I’d rather use a 50 or 30mm prime behind the basket.

In general prime lenses are better for basketball. I think f/2.8 usually isn’t good enough especially if the light is iffy, which it always is here in the Philippines.

One tip: during free throws you should focus on the players angling for the rebound. You can get some great shots of guys boxing out this way. 🙂
