My situation currently is that I have been asked to photograph my mothers wedding. I am an amateur photographer. She can’t afford a pro photographer so I am it for her. I have a canon dslr xti. I just got a canon speedlite 420ex flash, thankfully which will help. I don’t have any lighting equipment and not much cash to buy anything else right now. I thought about renting lighting eqp but I wouldn’t know how to use it! Any advice?? Wedding is in a church, 4:00pm ceremony, 100ish people. Help…

With some photographers it’s like a catch 22. You need to have experience before you shoot portraits but can’t get experience because it’s taboo to be a new young photographer. Some articles should just say, “If you don’t have 10 years under your belt, try another profession”. Your article is friendly to all levels. Thank you.

I do want to point out that good, expensive, quality equipment is still the best choice if you are planning a career (and can afford it) I’ve upgraded since I originally wrote this post and now use a 5DMKII and all “L” series glass.

All I can find is expensive glass recommended by the photographers which I think should logically be purchased by those whom are earning alot. I am a beginner photographer and can’t afford the expensive glass right now so was looking for options like these. Thank you once again

Part of the problem with moving to that body is that I use CS3, which doesn’t support the RAW from the 5Dmk2, which means an upgrade to CS4 or RAW conversion in another program. Also, the 5dMK2 uses different batteries than the 40D so that means buying more batteries. Finally, I know that if I but one 5Dmk2 I will eventully buy a second because I will want that high ISO factor on both my camera’s. The alternative would be to use one body and switch lens, which I don’t like to do.

HOWEVER….

Now that the 1Dmk4 has been announced, I’m wondering if I will decide to become a “lens swapper” so that I can buy that camera ($5000). I think that I might rather have one 1DMK4 than two 5DMK2’s.
